Children play along a narrow street in Chefchaouen as daily life moves around them — a moment where color, movement, and routine briefly intersect in Morocco’s Blue City.

Uncommon Journeys: Travel Images

These photographs were made while moving through the world, but they are not about travel in the traditional sense. They are about paying attention — to the quiet moments between destinations, to lives unfolding just beyond the frame, and to the stories that surface when time is taken to listen.

From Namibia, Rwanda, and Burundi to India, Myanmar, Vietnam, Peru, Cuba, New Zealand, and Morocco, this work reflects years of traveling with a camera as a way of entering into conversation rather than observation. Whether photographing a family at home, a worker in the midst of daily labor, or a fleeting street moment, each image is shaped by context, curiosity, and respect.

These stories emerge slowly, informed by time spent returning to places, building trust, and allowing everyday life to guide the work. While the settings span continents, the focus remains consistent: human connection, cultural memory, and the ways people shape — and are shaped by — the places they inhabit.

Selected works from this series are published annually in the Julia Cumes Uncommon Journeys calendar, produced by Robert Manz Studios.
