  • A group of cowboys. some wearing yellow rain slickers, head out to herd mother cows and their calves to the Kahua Ranch coral to brand, innoculate and castrate them on a rainy morning in North Kohala, Hawaii. Despite the warm sea level temperatures in Hawaii, the weather is often brutal up country at 3,000 feet and higher where some of the best ranchland is. Winds can blow at 60 miles an hour or more and temperatures can drop into the low 40's.

  • A male blue-footed booby tries to catch the attention of his female partner by performing a courtship ritual on Espanola Island in the Galaogos. Apparently, the name ìboobyî comes from the Spanish word ìboboî which means ìclownî or ìfoolî or ístupidî. They earned this name because of their clumsy movements on land. Famous for their mating dance, the male booby will spread his wings and lift his blue feet high off the ground to impress his female partner with whom he mates for life.

  • An aerial view of the Kohala coast where many of Hawaii's ranches are located. Some of the best ranchland, however, is up country at 3,000 feet and higher where winds can blow at 60 miles an hour or more and temperatures can drop into the low 40's. "We'd get up, like 2:30 in the morning, saddle the horses. It would be pouring rain and wind and cold but we loved the lifetyle. That was our love," says Sonny Keakealani, reflecting back on his years working as a cowboy. Today he takes care of a small ranch along the Kohala coast.

  • Wayne Tachera, a cowboy for Kahua Ranch, lets the ranch's herd of horses out of the coral after spraying them with a fly repellent. In the distance, one can see the ocean. The ranch is located at 3,000 feet above sea level where some of the best grazing lands are.

  • I photographed this small girl in Stone Town, Zanzibar while documenting a program that aspires to empower women through aquaculture. I was so struck by the color of the young girls' clothing against the green and yellow wall and the way in which she was hanging from the windowsill, feet just slightly off the ground, in a shy yet playful way. Having spent the previous weeks discovering how limited the opportunities for women and girls are in Zanzibar, I found her vulnerability and spiritedness particularly poignant.

  • Kavita Kurbati, 18, sits inside her family home in the bustling town of Gokak, India, waiting for a customer. In her arms is daughter Chaitra (1) and sleeping peacefully at her feet is Rakshita (3). When Kavita reached puberty, her mother, drawing on an ancient religious tradition, dedicated her to the Hindu deity, Yellamma, thus turning her daughter into a Devadasi or "female servant of god". This meant that Kavita was "married" to Yellamma, which made her ineligible to marry a mortal. Instead, as a means of pleasing Yellamma and bringing better fortunes to her family, she would serve as a "temple prostitute", satisfying the needs of men in her community.
