A "Witch's" Plight

Sayi Mwandu, 56, who had part of her hand cut off by fellow villagers, stands in the doorway of her room in Kolandoto, a protective institution in Shinyanga, Tanzania. Mwandu was accused of being a witch after her eyes turned red from over-exposure to smoke from cooking fires. Mwandu is not alone in her victimization. Older women in many parts of the world, including Tanzania, are still persecuted and accused of witchcraft. Many are killed. Often, the accusations are an attempt to oust the woman from property the accusers hope to gain access to.
