Stone Town Girl

I photographed this small girl in Stone Town, Zanzibar while documenting a program that aspires to empower women through aquaculture. I was so struck by the color of the young girls' clothing against the green and yellow wall and the way in which she was hanging from the windowsill, feet just slightly off the ground, in a shy yet playful way. Having spent the previous weeks discovering how limited the opportunities for women and girls are in Zanzibar, I found her vulnerability and spiritedness particularly poignant.
