Sonny Keakealani, one of the most respected cowboys in the community and patriarch of the Keakealani family, has one of his many saddles and hats sitting in the corner of his living room. Keakealani's saddle is the traditional Hawaiian tree saddle unique to the Hawaiian islands. The Hawaiian tree saddle has a rawhide fork cover with integral braids, attaching it to the rigging ring. This allows the saddle to be stripped down to the bare tree, making it waterproof for swimming cattle to the boats.
