I photographed Umetesi in Kigali, Rwanda, where every afternoon she watched with wide eyes as I taught photography to older children, mostly boys. Despite the fact that Rwanda has one of the highest literacy rates for girls in Africa, families still tend to spend available funds on the education of boys, have expectations that girls will provide the care for younger siblings and do the household chores and that they will marry young. My hope is that next year when I return to Rwanda, Umetesi will be the one holding a camera, not called away for chores or believing she should watch from the corner.
